In today’s corporate landscape, headquarters design has become a critical competitive advantage. Tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Apple have long understood that world-class campuses aren’t just perks — they’re essential recruitment tools. For Walmart, consolidating operations to bring associates together in their 400+ acre Home Office while competing for top talent presented a unique challenge. The company needed to create an amenity-rich, mixed-use environment that could rival any coastal tech hub, while staying true to its values of sustainability and efficiency.
Gensler served as Executive Architect for the overall development and as Design Architect for the 11 mass‑timber office buildings, parking decks, street‑front retail, and the Airship coffee shop. Each building maximizes daylight through floor-to-ceiling windows and flexible indoor-outdoor work environments. Associates connect with each other across patios, terraces, food truck pavilions, and amenity buildings. The Razorback Greenway weaves directly through the grounds, creating nearly seven miles of biking and walking trails. Open to the public and seamlessly integrated within the city, the Home Office reflects Walmart’s enduring commitment to its hometown.
The Home Office has become a powerful tool for attracting top talent. According to Walmart’s Chief Talent Officer, candidates are three times more likely to relocate to Bentonville after experiencing the environment firsthand. Beyond recruitment, the Home Office has revitalized the broader Bentonville community, creating a blueprint for how large corporations can invest in their hometowns. It embodies Walmart’s core values of prioritizing people and the planet, delivering an environment where associates thrive, and the company’s sustainability values come to life.
